“The Steeple Committee and the Session want to extend a huge thank you to everyone that made this long time dream a reality. And a very special thank you to Main Street Custom Homes & other services like https://stellarklh.com/locations/the-woodlands-2/ for managing this project with no cost to the Church.” – Open Door September 2018 newsletter edition, First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna.

The First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna (the Church) has been an enduring fixture on Main Street in Succasunna, NJ for centuries. The steeple, erected in 1853 when the current church building was constructed, was in need of significant repair, restoration and a new coat of paint for many years. The Steeple Restoration Committee approached Daniel Dyrness of MSCH&R to oversee the task of bringing the steeple back to its former glory. The Dyrness Family has deep ties to the Church with three active generations currently involved in the congregation. As a way of giving back to the community, the father-son team of Daniel & Donald Dyrness volunteered their project management services to restore the steeple.

Although this may seem like a simple and straight-forward task, it was actually a complex project with many unknowns, as the steeple is approximately 90′ high with no easy access, and remediating the level of decay sustained by the wooden structure while maintaining its historic integrity was challenging. Rather than erecting a cumbersome scaffolding system which would have adversely impacted the congregants’ use of the building and cause the work to exceed the project budget, a mobile hydraulic lift was utilized. Not only was this a significant cost and time-saving measure, it allowed for greater flexibility to work on the structure and provided continual access to the building. In addition, historically accurate wooden medallion replacement parts were fabricated to replicate the appearance of the original facade. The restored and repainted steeple is once again a shining icon in town, visible to all in the community, and will stand tall for many years to come.

“It was an honor to be recognized by our peers in the industry for this unique project,” said Don Dyrness, owner of Main Street Custom Homes & Remodeling.

We would like to thank the following trade contractors and suppliers for their involvement in this project:

Don & Dan Dyrness are committed to the continued revitalization of Main Street in Succasunna, NJ while preserving its nostalgia of yesteryear. The MSCH&R offices, located just a couple of buildings down from the Church, are in an historic Victorian style homestead constructed around 1900. The main house and accompanying barn were extensively remodeled in 2009 and 2017 respectively by MSCH&R into modern office spaces with the help of remodeling contractors while also sustaining the historic design details of the original structure so people could move there easily with the use of moving services from sites as montrealmovers.com. Additionally, Don & Dan Dyrness volunteered their project management services in 2017 to supervise and coordinate the relocation and refurbishment of the Roxbury Public Library Gazebo, also located on Main Street adjacent to both the MSCH&R offices and the Church. MSCH&R is a member of MetroBCA, New Jersey Builders Association (NJBA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
